ORCA Rubbing Strakes (Rubrails) for RIBs

ORCA® rubbing strakes (rubrails, fender strips) in EPDM rubber, to glue on the tubes of RIBs and tenders to protect them from impacts and friction against quays, pontoons and rocks. Two profiles: Shark, 90 mm wide, in 16 m, and Tunnel, 135 mm, on a 60 m reel for large RIBs and boatyards.

More about rubbing strakes

Rubbing strakes for RIB tubes

A rubbing strake, also called a rubrail or fender strip, is a rubber profile glued along the tube. It takes the knocks and friction instead of the fabric: when coming alongside, at the pontoon, on the trailer or against floating objects. A worn strake can be replaced, which costs far less than a tube.

Shark or Tunnel: which profile should I choose?

ProfileWidth × thicknessWeightPackagingColoursWhat it is for
Shark 90 × 25 mm 0.97 kg/m 16 m Black Leisure RIBs and tenders
Tunnel 135 × 36 mm 1.44 kg/m 60 m (black) or 2 × 25 m (Neptune grey) Black, Neptune grey Large RIBs, professional use, heavy abrasion

According to the manufacturer, the Tunnel profile is mainly used on professional and military RIBs, for its high abrasion resistance.

Fitting a rubbing strake

  1. Measure the length of tube to be fitted on each side and add the two together.
  2. Remove the old strake if needed, then clean and degrease the tube, for example with New Magic.
  3. Bond it with ORCA Glue neoprene adhesive mixed with ORCA RFE hardener, or the glue + hardener kit, following the ORCA gluing guide (PDF, in French).
  4. Press firmly along the whole length and leave to dry for the time given before going afloat.

For highly exposed areas (front of the tube, diver entry points), add an ORCA TECH 288 reinforcement sheet. Read also reinforcing RIB tubes.
